National Childcare Investment Programme
The National Childcare Investment Programme (NCIP) 2006-2010 was announced on the 7th December 2005 and came into effect on the 1st January 2006, thereby succeeding the Equal Opportunities Childcare Programme (EOCP) 2000-2006.
The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (OMCYA) has responsibility for the NCIP and Pobal manages the day-to-day operations of the Programme in collaboration with OMCYA. The NCIP is working to build on the achievements of the EOCP and will incorporate a number of key objectives. These are to:
- Increase the supply and improve the quality of early childhood care and education services, part-time and full-day care, school age childcare and childminding;
- Support families to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage;
- Support a co-ordinated approach to the delivery of childcare, which is centred on the needs of the child.
Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Scheme
On 1st January 2010 the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Scheme came into effect. The Scheme is expected to benefit some 70,000 children, aged between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months, every year.
