Since its formation in 1992, Pobal has worked on behalf of Government to support communities and local agencies towards achieving social inclusion outcomes. Pobal has evolved and grown significantly, it has developed in response to Government priorities and adapted its skills to respond to changes and challenges.
As Chairperson, my approach is to provide leadership and oversight of the future strategy and policies, in particular on implementing Government policy on social inclusion and early years.
While there have been improvements in Ireland’s social and economic landscape, there are still a number of areas that require targeting of funding supports and collaborative solutions to enable inclusive communities.
Pobal is committed to working with Government to deliver valuable services and improve the opportunities for marginalized communities in Ireland, now and into the future. This is demonstrated in our overall Strategic Plan 2018 – 2021.
A key strategic priority for me as Chairperson is to ensure that Pobal continues to provide a highly effective service for managing Government grants and payments to communities. This must be underpinned by high standards in accountability, in financial management, and in the support we provide to all those we work with.
Central to our work are the local groups and partnerships with which Pobal engages and in particular the staff, volunteers and board members of these organisations who work tirelessly for their community. Pobal’s commitment to social inclusion, and to community development through working with local groups, with agencies and with childcare providers is what we do, and it is what we are.
I am proud to say that every day, in towns and villages across Ireland, there are Pobal staff on the ground working with communities delivering services locally, to combat social exclusion, to build stronger communities, to support families, to assist individuals and to nurture children every day.
I am privileged to lead Pobal forward as Chairperson, having served on the Board since 2013. I wish to acknowledge the leadership and commitment to Pobal from my colleagues on the Board who give their time freely for no monetary compensation.
