Pobal is delighted to join colleagues across the sector to celebrate Charity Trustees’ Week 2021. This year’s events and initiatives will take place online, allowing charity trustees, many of whom are giving of their time and expertise on a voluntary basis, alongside their full-time careers, to take part from the comfort of their own home or office.

Charity Trustees’ Week is hosted in partnership by the Charities Regulator, Boardmatch Ireland, Carmichael, The Wheel, Volunteer Ireland, Charities Institute Ireland, Pobal and Dóchas. The week aims to celebrate and thank trustees for the key role which they play in the governance and leadership of Ireland’s charities as well as:

  • Highlighting the importance of good governance of boards, promoting the need for a thorough knowledge of trustees’ roles and responsibilities, education and upskilling of trustees;
  • Highlighting the need for new trustees to come forward and the means by which new trustees can be connected with charities that need trustees;
  • Creating a greater understanding and awareness among the public of the role of trustees, and the awareness that trustees are public members.

Anna Shakespeare, Pobal CEO said:

“Pobal is very pleased to take part in Charity Trustees’ Week 2021, our third year as a partner and member of the steering committee. We will be running a full schedule of events throughout the week. I am particularly happy to announce that our recently appointed Chairperson of the Pobal Board, Rosarii Mannion, will be co-hosting and chairing our Coffee Morning event, in collaboration with Boardmatch Ireland on Tuesday morning 16 November which will explore strategies for filling the skills gaps on community, voluntary and charity boards.

I am also very pleased to announce that our series of four regional events will explore the subject of resilience during and post pandemic. This is a particularly appropriate topic as the Community, Voluntary, Social Enterprise and Charity sectors in Ireland, and indeed globally, has faced considerable challenges during the COVID-19 crisis. Pobal are very aware, through our work with these organisations that many such groups have faced an increasing demand for their services in very difficult operational circumstances, while others had no option but to close their doors with some staff members being furloughed and others adapting to working remotely. In addition, significantly reduced income generation and fundraising opportunities have resulted in unprecedented financial challenges for many organisations in the Community, Voluntary, Social Enterprise and Charity sectors. These events will offer an opportunity for Trustees in these sectors to share and learn from the experiences of their peers.”

Pobal’s Events for Charity Trustees Week 2021 include:

  • Building Resilience During and Post COVID-19 – a series of four regional online targeted events for trustees of organisations supported by programmes Pobal administers on behalf of the Government of Ireland. .
  • Charity Trustees’ Week Coffee Morning, co-hosted with Boardmatch Ireland: ‘Reviewing the Skills on Your Board’ – Register for this event here.
